Greg . . . did you and your family get a refund of the tax as you left St. Maarten?

On our trip home, the AA representative at SXM did indeed refund the $30 per head departure tax...her only comment was that if she had not had the cash on hand (which she did) she would have had to offer us a "voucher" instead of cash.

Please tell us what was required . . . and did you have to go to the main counter for AA?

We had to go to the main AA counter since we had checked bags. At the AA main counter we had to provide proof that we had not stayed on St Martin for longer than 24 hours-- acceptable proof in our case meant simply providing the boarding passes we had saved for the round trip flight to SBH on St Barth Commuter. Since we had arrived to SXM via AA, the clerk was able to establish our arrival date and time to SXM from their flight records plus our tickets.

Sounds quite easy, if one is willing to go to the main counter.
What was your experience with St. Barth Commuter? Worth the extra money?

Actually St Barth Commuter costs about half what Winair does if you use their scheduled flights. On the way to SBH, we left about 45 minutes early as all passengers were there and ready to go.

I didn't know that St. Barth Commuter has scheduled flights . . . will have to inquire about the schedule! Thanks.

On the return from my June trip I successfully negotiated the refund of $60 in departure tax ($30 x 2 people) by American Airlines. Given the hints on the St Barth Dental Association website, the information gleaned from the airport website, information gathered here, the alignment of the planets, the phase of the moon, and the total absence of a line of people behind me, I decided that it was time to "go to the mattresses". I was having difficulty in convincing the counter agent that I owed no tax, but gave her sufficient information (in transit both on my way into SXM on AA and out of SXM on AA, haven't spent 24 hours in-country, etc.) that when she spoke with a supervisor she was instructed to refund the money.
For documentation I had my Winair e-ticket printout, my AA e-ticket printout, and the stubs from that day's SXM Immigration forms. Oddly, the fact that I had paid a departure tax from SBH (noted on my Winair e-ticket) seemed to carry some weight with the counter agent. One of the agent's arguments was that "nobody else asks for a refund". My reply was that perhaps the others don't know the departure tax rules as well as I do, and they should be asking for a refund - but I know the rules, had not spent 24 hours on SXM, and was due a refund. "Polite but firm" won the day.
The whole process took about 10 minutes from the start of the discussion to cash in my hand.
Perhaps Greg ran into the agent who I had already "softened up", or perhaps we're all behind the curve here, others have been getting their rightful refunds for years, and we're just finding out about it.
As to SBH Commuter - I've only flown them as a charter, but I know others who fly them as a scheduled flight. Put a yellow ribbon (or one of their flourescent green/yellow baggage tags) on your bag, and they will pull your lugage for you - no need to engage SBH Services, no need to clear immigration, go straight to the transit gate. If your SXM flights match their 1-a-day schedule then it is a great deal.

I couldn't have been happier with ST Barths Commuter. When we
arrived at SXM there was a nice young man standing right next to the
departure gate #10 with a sign with our name on it. He asked for
our baggage claim tickets and led us to the counter inside to
wait. When he returned he said that we had a charter flight as we
were the only passengers and would be leaving immediately. We
were in sxm less than 25 mnutes.
We also got our $30 back. Coming back we spent the night in St
Martin as we had a 7:00am departure. When we got to the ticket
agent, I asked if we could please get our departure tax back as we had
been in St Martin less than 24 hours. With our boarding pass from
the day before we were also given $30 per person.
Worked like a charm...Thanks Estrella Segunda for paving the way

Thanks are best directed to the person who pointed me at the SBH Dental Association website. It was someone here, but I've forgotten who. Anyone want to take credit?

Beachy deserves the credit for unearthing the mention of the tax refund she noticed in the SBH Dental Association website, while Second Star deserves the credit for "softening up" AA for the rest of us.

Linda and i also received a tax refund. I asked at the AA counter for a refund and only was asked what evidence I had to show that I did not spend 24 hours at sxm. My St Barth commuter boarding passes was all I needed. The counter person did have trouble getting the cash but it only took a minute. I gues they got me back when my flight in miami was late and they rebooked me the next day at 4:00pm and put me up at the Hilton. Room service at the Hilton cost me $150 and with AA's $10 per person dinner allowance i was out one day and over $100 bucks.
